What to know before your first morning in Suriname

Start simple: Dutch is the official language, English is common in Paramaribo hotels, SRD is the local currency, and the historic centre is walkable from Hotel Palacio on Heerenstraat.

Suriname is South American, Caribbean, Amazonian, Dutch-speaking, multilingual, and deeply mixed. Paramaribo is the easiest place to start because food, history, river life, markets, architecture, and day trips sit close together.

Arrive at Hotel Palacio on Heerenstraat. Ask the front desk what is open, what is nearby, and what is worth doing first. The historic centre starts outside the door.

Keep the first days simple. Walk the centre first. Add food, market, or river context next. Move outward to Peperpot, Commewijne, or a longer nature route once the city makes sense.
