The day begins with a river crossing, and that alone sets the tone. The Suriname River is wide and brown and busy with small boats, and as the city falls away behind you, the pace of everything drops. On the far bank waits Commewijne: the old estates that once grew coffee, cacao, and sugar, some carefully restored, others half-reclaimed by the trees, all of them heavy with history.
This is Suriname’s plantation past made tangible — the wealth and the hardship both — set among some of the prettiest riverine country in the region. It’s a trip that rewards curiosity: the more you want to understand, the more there is to find.
Commewijne is where a great deal of Suriname’s story was written — the coffee and sugar that made the colony rich, and the enslaved and indentured people whose labour built it. Seeing it in the landscape, rather than a museum case, gives the history a weight that stays with you long after the boat ride home.
How the day unfolds
After the crossing, you’ll travel between the estates by road and water, stopping where the stories are. At the old plantations, your guide fills in the history — how they worked, who worked them, and what became of them — while the buildings and avenues do their own quiet talking.
In between are villages where ordinary Surinamese life carries on, a lookout or two over the water, and food stops where the local kitchen does the talking instead. It’s the kind of day that mixes the serious and the simple: a sobering plantation history in the morning, a plate of home cooking and a cold drink by the river in the afternoon.
Near the river mouth, if the timing and the tide are kind, you may even glimpse dolphins — a fine way to end a day already full of water and green. Take it as a half day for the highlights, or a full one to let it breathe.
