This is not a quick outing, and it isn’t meant to be. Galibi sits at the far northeastern edge of Suriname, where the Marowijne river meets the ocean, and simply getting there is part of the experience: overland to the coast, then by boat to the Indigenous villages near the river mouth. It is remote, and the comfort is simple — which is precisely the point. This is nature on its own terms, not a show arranged for visitors.
What draws people across all that distance is one of the great wildlife sights on earth. In season, enormous sea turtles — including the vast leatherback — haul themselves out of the surf at night to lay their eggs on the same beaches where they were born, as they have for millions of years.
It is a genuine wildlife encounter, not a staged one — no enclosures, no guarantees, just a wild beach and the patience to wait on it. That honesty is exactly what makes it unforgettable.
How the trip unfolds
You travel out during the day, watching the country change from city to coast, and settle into simple accommodation near the villages. There’s time to meet the community, learn a little of Indigenous Kalina and Lokono life, and feel just how far from everywhere you’ve come.
Then, after dark, the real reason for the journey. On a beach under an enormous, star-heavy sky, you wait — and in season the turtles arrive, huge and ancient and utterly unbothered by you, digging, laying, and hauling themselves back to the sea. Guides make sure it’s done respectfully, with no lights or noise to disturb them. It is quiet, humbling, and the kind of thing people remember for the rest of their lives.
The next day you make the journey back, tired and quietly changed, with a story few travellers ever get to tell.
