The Jodensavanne Heritage Trip is a half- to full-day tour upriver from Paramaribo to the ruins of one of the earliest Jewish settlements in the Americas — synagogue foundations, an old cemetery, and a green, silent clearing above the Suriname River. It is one of the most unusual and reflective places in the country.

In the seventeenth century, Sephardic Jews — many fleeing persecution in Europe and Brazil — were granted unusual freedoms in the Dutch colony of Suriname, and here, on a bluff above the Suriname River, they built a settlement of their own. Jodensavanne, the ‘Jews’ Savannah’, grew into a thriving plantation community with its own synagogue — among the oldest in the hemisphere.

Time and the jungle have since reclaimed most of it. What remains is quietly powerful: brick foundations, a weathered cemetery, and the outlines of a town returning slowly to the forest. It is a place more felt than seen — and its story, of refuge, prosperity, slavery, and decline, holds more of Suriname’s complexity than almost any single site in the country.

How the day unfolds

The journey out takes you south of the city and along the river, through countryside and past traces of the plantation era. At the site itself, a guide walks you through what the clearing once was: where the synagogue stood, how the community lived and traded, and the harder truths of a settlement built, like so many here, on enslaved labour.

You’ll spend time at the old cemetery, its inscriptions still legible in Hebrew and Portuguese, and take in the setting on the river that gives the whole place its stillness. It is reflective rather than spectacular — a day for people who like their history quiet and their surroundings green.

What makes it linger is the contrast. This was a place of remarkable tolerance for its age — a community allowed to worship and prosper freely when few others in the New World could — and, at the same time, a plantation society built on the enslavement of others. Standing in the quiet clearing, both truths sit side by side, and neither cancels the other. It is history at its most human: complicated, and impossible to reduce to a single story.

Few visitors make it this far out, which is part of the appeal — you often have the ruins and the river almost to yourself. In a country full of loud green life, it is a rare and welcome silence — an easy day to fall quiet on, and a hard one to forget.
